How overseas groupage moving works

Moving internationally doesn't have to mean paying for a full shipping container. Simplo's groupage service lets you share container space with other shipments heading to the same destination — so you pay only for the cubic metres you actually use, while we manage everything from collection at your European home to delivery at your new address overseas.

Here's exactly how a Simplo groupage move works, from first contact to final delivery.

What is groupage moving?

Groupage

Groupage (also called LCL — Less than Container Load) is a method of shipping where multiple customers' goods are consolidated into a single shared container. Each shipment is professionally packed, clearly labelled, and separated within the container. You pay for your share of the container space based on volume (cubic metres), not for the whole container.

For most people moving overseas, groupage is the most cost-effective option. Full containers (FCL — Full Container Load) are only economical for very large moves of 25+ cubic metres. For a studio apartment, a 1–2 bedroom home, or a partial household move, groupage saves significantly.

More details about groupage can be found in this artcile.

Note: Self-packed shipments are accepted for all destinations. However, some destination customs authorities conduct random inspections — our packing guide ensures your self-packed goods meet export standards.

Use our online quote calculator to enter your origin country, destination, and estimated volume. You'll get an immediate price estimate — no waiting, no sales call required. If you're not sure about your volume, our guide helps you estimate based on the number of rooms you're moving.

Step 2 - Confirm your booking
Confirm your booking

Once you're happy with your quote, confirm your booking online or with our team. We'll assign you a dedicated move coordinator — your single point of contact for the entire move.

Step 3 - Pre-move survey and packing plan
Pre-move survey

Your move coordinator conducts a pre-move survey (in person or by video call) to confirm your volume, identify any specialist items, and plan your packing. We advise on what can and cannot be shipped to your destination and flag any customs requirements specific to your route.

Step 4 - Professional packing (optional)
Professional packing

Our team can pack your entire home using export-grade materials, or you can pack yourself using our supplied packing kits. Either way, we provide a full itemised inventory — a legal requirement for customs clearance at your destination.

Step 5 - Collection from your European home
Collection from your European home

We collect your packed and inventoried goods from your home anywhere in Europe. A collection vehicle arrives at your agreed date and time. All items are logged and loaded under our care.

Step 6 - Consolidation at our Rotterdam hub
Consolidation at our Rotterdam hub

Your shipment travels to our consolidation hub near Rotterdam — the main gateway for European overseas freight. Here your goods are professionally loaded into a shared container alongside other shipments heading to the same destination. Every shipment is separated, labelled, and secured within the container.

Step 7 - Ocean freight
Ocean freight

Your container departs on a scheduled ocean sailing. We work with established carriers on all our routes and provide real-time tracking so you can follow your shipment throughout transit. Typical ocean transit times by destination:

Destination Transit time
USA (East Coast) 4–6 weeks (door-to-door incl. consolidation)
USA (West Coast) 6–8 weeks (via Panama Canal)
Canada (East) 5–8 weeks (via Halifax or Montreal)
UAE (Dubai) 4–6 weeks (via Suez Canal)
South Africa 7–10 weeks (via Cape Town or Durban)
Australia 10–14 weeks (via Suez or around Cape)
New Zealand 10–15 weeks (longest haul from Europe)
Step 8 - Customs clearance at destination
Customs clearance at destination

Simplo coordinates customs clearance at your destination port through a licensed customs broker or clearing agent. We prepare and submit all required documentation — including your itemised inventory, proof of residence, and any destination-specific forms — on your behalf. Each destination has different requirements; your move coordinator briefs you on exactly what's needed well before departure.

Step 9 - Door-to-door delivery
Door-to-door delivery

Once cleared through customs, your goods are transported from the port to your new address. Standard delivery is to the door. Unpacking, furniture placement, and debris removal are available as optional add-ons.

Step 10 - Move complete

Your move coordinator follows up to confirm successful delivery and address any outstanding items. If you've used our storage service, remaining goods can be delivered in a second consignment at a time that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate my volume?

A rough guide: a studio apartment is typically 5–10 m³, a 1-bedroom flat 10–15 m³, a 2-bedroom home 15–25 m³, and a 3-bedroom+ home 25–40+ m³. More details can be found in this article. Your move coordinator confirms the exact volume at the pre-move survey.

Is groupage safe? Will my goods be mixed with other people's?

Yes, groupage is safe. Your goods are professionally packed and clearly labelled within the container. They are physically separated from other shipments using internal bracing and partitions. Your goods are never handled by other customers. Groupage is the standard method used by professional international movers worldwide.

What happens if my goods are delayed at customs?

Customs delays are rare when documentation is complete and correct. Simplo prepares all documentation before departure to minimise the risk. If an inspection or delay occurs, your move coordinator manages the process and keeps you informed. Storage charges at the destination port are covered for a standard hold period.

Can I add or remove items after booking?

Yes — volume adjustments can be made up to the packing date. Adding significant volume late may affect your consolidation slot and pricing. Your move coordinator advises on any changes.

Do you offer door-to-door service for all destinations?

Yes. Simplo provides door-to-door service for all six destinations: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and UAE. This means collection at your European home and delivery to your new overseas address — no self-managing at ports or customs facilities.
